Double cross stitch

Double cross stitch

Double cross stitch is worked over four or two threads of an evenweave fabric, or over four blocks of aida, to create a series of bold crosses or ‘stars’.

Work a normal cross stitch first, then add a vertical cross on top. To keep all double cross stitches uniform, make sure the direction of the stitches within them is the same. The second cross can be worked in a different colour to add interest, in which case work the stitch in two stages: all the lower crosses first, followed by the top crosses.

(Also known as Smyrna or leviathan stitch.)
