Tent stitch and diagonal tent stitch
Tent stitch (sometimes called continental tent stitch) is best known as a canvaswork stitch. It has long slanting stitches on the back, and even, full stitches on the front. The long slanting stitches on the back cause the distortion of the canvas which is characteristic of this stitch.
Diagonal tent stitch is also known as basketweave because of the woven effect on the reverse. The stitches are worked diagonally across the canvas threads so they distort the canvas less than ordinary tent stitch. This method produces an even, full stitch and is pleasing to work. It is a good idea to use straight lines of tent stitch for working a design, and then complete the background in diagonal tent stitch.
